Vaccinations
We would advise parents to hear both sides of the vaccination story from as many sources as possible before
they make up their minds.
History
Although Edward Jenner has been credited with the development of vaccination, in reality it was first introduced
into England by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in 1721. She copied a method that was in use in Turkey whereby people
deliberately infected themselves or ‘inoculated’ themselves with a mild form of smallpox. Since many people
adopting this therapy died of smallpox, it became clear that it wasn’t as successful as was believed to be.
In 1796, Jenner, a doctor working in Gloucester noticed that anyone who contracted cowpox rarely caught smallpox.
With this hypothesis he deliberately infected an eight year old boy with the pus from a cowpox sore.
The boy became very ill but recovered. Jenner then proceeded to infect the boy with smallpox. The boy didn’t
catch smallpox. The previous infection of cowpox had protected him. This heralded the practice of vaccination
as we know it today.
In 1798 Jenner published his findings which were met with such scepticism that many doctors continued to
inoculate with smallpox pus. In 1840, this practice became banned and Jenner’s method was made compulsory in
1853. Not surprisingly many protestors argued against compulsory vaccination saying that it infringed on their
right and limited their personal choice; a similar debate is raging today over the MMR vaccine.
